Heat case study: blog tasks

Introduction - Heat Media pack

1) Look at the Heat Media Pack. Go to page 2: the Heat mission. Write three things that Heat offers its readers under 'print'.

In print – we bring readers a truly unique, quality experience. From clever A-list access shoots no other magazine could pull off to celeb news – heat has the celeb contacts to give readers the exclusive every time.

2) Now go to page 3 of the Media Pack - celebrity focus. What does the page say that Heat offers readers?

Celebrity news: heat is the beating heart of the showbiz world. We ensure heat readers are always in the know and give them conversation- starters they can show off about to their mates down the pub. Our journalists have the answers to the questions before they’ve even been asked. We help celebrities to talk about their biggest secrets and we find the funny, wherever it’s hiding.

3) Now look at page 4 of the Heat Media Pack. What other content does Heat magazine offer its readers aside from celebrity news?

Life Hacks: Our lifestyle guide covers food, fitness, wellbeing, travel and homes, all with a unique heat twist. From travel features such as wellness holidays to make you human again to Insta-worthy recipes and the latest A-list work-outs...

4) Look at page 5. What is Heat magazine's audience profile? Write all the key details of their audience here.

The Unmissables: heat’s extensive and highly credible entertainment coverage sets us apart from our rivals. Our team of

Media language

1) How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine?

They use rhetorical questions which suggests drama, exclamation marks, written in large fonts in capital, different colour schemes and names of celebs.

2) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The vibrant colours suggest energy, excitement and maybe drama.
The colour pink attracts females as they are the target audience as stereotypes say they enjoy gossip, drama etc.

3) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)

Six images on front cover which are examples of paparazzi shots reinforces gossip magazine e.g. two shot of harry and Megan, pack shots of actual products and medium close up of posh which focuses on her facial expressions to create suspense.

4) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.

- Heat uses more san serif whereas Tatler uses serif.
- Heat has a range of different colour scheme whereas Tatler focuses on a few colours.
- Heat uses more images to support evidence.

Media Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.

- harry
- Megan marckle
- Giovanna
- Victoria beckam
- Mariah carey
- Liam
- Dani

2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

Majority of them are portrayed as villains and are seen to be involved in scandals, for example Victoria Beckam was caught and accused of lying to everyone and paparazzi photos was taken of her. However Giovanna was portrayed as a hero as she was the winner of a famous reality tv show called i am a celeb. The HEAT magazine is mostly for people who are lower class and enjoy finding out gossip and drama.

3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.

The colour scheme pink is used to attract female audiences attention. The images used represents women negatively as they are being accused with false accusations e.g. 'posh caught out, secretive star accused of lying to everyone.'

4) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class)

I think for the HEAT magazine the social class isn't low however middle to low class people buy it as its not too expensive and include a lot of gossip which is interesting to them. The Tatler magazine is more for the higher class people  who are interested in fashion etc.
